Choosing to veer away from his families vineyard in Rioja, Alvaro Palacios was drawn to the potential of Priorat, situated in the warmer regions of northern Spain benefits from riper fruit flavours with vines planted on dramatically sloped hills decreases yield to further concentrate the fruit and prevent any mechanical harvesting preserving the purity and finesse of the wines.
Known for their flagship L’Ermita wines, Alvaro Palacios has been instrumental in establishing Priorat as a premium wine region on the international stage, regularly capturing high 90 and 100pts from international critics.
Head winemaker Alvaro Palacios spent his formative years in Bordeaux gaining an appreciation for classic wine and has implemented a lot of this philosophy in his approach to winemaking in Spain.
While each winery and vineyard project has a slightly different focal point depending on the location, history and vision of the specific winery, a deep respect for the local terroir and native varieties and the unrelenting belief of the value they can add to wine when utilised effectively unites all the locations with common purpose.
Featuring primarily Garnacha-based wines in most of the vineyards with blends of other native varieties such as Carignan and Syrah, Palacios accepts that introducing foreign grapes can be a useful tool for the development of a wine. However he passionately maintains that the native grapes of a land will always hold the advantage of cultivating a perfect affinity with the terroir and the climate to thrive and offer the purest representation of its character when respected and tended to properly.
Created initially as a label to offer a balanced and representative taste of the Priorat region, the Alvaro Palacios Les Terrasses blends wines from various steep and terraced vineyards in Priorat workings its way up from a value wine to a statement wine that captures the essence of Priorat.
Adding the ‘Velles Vinyes’ to the label to denote the exclusive use of old vines, the 2019 wine displays an intense ruby in the glass and bursts with flavours of black cherries, blackberries, spice and minerals. With a composition of 82% Garnacha, 17% Carinena an 1% white grapes, the 2019 Alvaro Palacios Les Terrasses undergoes destemming and light crushing with fermentation in concrete and oak vats and maturation in French Oak barrels for 12 months, the wine is a truly refined and pure expression of the Priorat region- a guaranteed crowd pleaser!
